Expert Endodontic treatment and care at Oatlands Dental Lounge

Root canal treatments can be technically demanding, and so can prove challenging for non-specialist dentists to resolve. Here at Oatlands Dental Lounge, we have an Endodontic specialist as part of our team, Dr Masih Yamini, who is continually seeking to progress his already advanced knowledge of what is considered one of the most complex fields of dentistry. It’s common for other areas in the facial, head and neck region to imitate toothache and an Endodontist plays a vital role in making the correct diagnosis, differentiating tooth-related pain from other possible sources. Dr Yamini is qualified to deal with the most complex cases, so you can be sure you’re in great hands.

FAQs

1. Why might I need Endodontic treatment?

Every tooth in your mouth is home to a nerve, located at the centre. Should the nerve become exposed to bacteria through decay, trauma or deep fillings, this can provoke an infection that causes pain, swelling and even an abscess. Meanwhile, there are some cases where no symptoms manifest, with the infection only being visible after an x-ray is taken.

2. What does a root canal treatment involve?

Root canal treatment can generally be carried out in a single visit in the case of single-rooted teeth, whilst multiple rooted teeth tend to require additional appointments. During your first visit, the root canals are located after which the infected pulp is removed. Through the careful use of precision instruments, the root canal is cleaned and shaped in preparation for the root canal filling process. This involves the inside of the tooth being thoroughly disinfected and drying of the canals, so the filling can be placed.

3. What if I don’t have treatment?

Avoiding treatment may result in the affected tooth needing to be removed. This is because when the pulp of a tooth dies, it isn’t able to fully heal, even with the help of antibiotics. We strongly recommend that you undergo treatment, to protect your overall oral and dental health.

4. Will the tooth be strong after treatment?

A strong adhesive restoration will ensure your tooth is strong following treatment. We may recommend an onlay or a crown to fortify your tooth. To reduce your chance of needing future treatment, make sure you attend routine dentist and hygienist appointments, so any potential problems can be spotted and treated early.

5. Do root canals always work?

With a success rate of almost 90%, root canal treatment is highly likely to bring about a positive result. The efficacy of a root canal may be hindered if a tooth develops decay, the restoration fails, or if the tooth heals poorly for unexpected reasons. Should any of these problems arise, we may perform the further endodontic treatment (such as a re-root canal) or suggest surgical intervention.
