Self-Ligating Braces
At Oatlands Dental Lounge we fit braces on many patients however, the process can be long, tedious and uncomfortable. Traditionally, normal braces have tiny bands made of elastic or metal, which hold the wire in place on your teeth but can trap particles of food and restrict movement in the mouth so an alternative treatment method is a self-ligating brace.
What is a self-ligating brace?
Self-ligating braces have been around for over eighty years and offer a less restrictive option, as they do not need to make use of bands of elastic or metal. They are made of metal, ceramic or with a clear bracket, blend in with the teeth and are definitely more aesthetically pleasing than the full on standard braces. They either have a passive or active bracket.
How do these braces work?
A self-ligating brace moves the teeth gently using the minimum amount of wires. It has a ‘trap door’ design built into the bracket which lets the special orthodontic arch wire slide along and through the brackets as the teeth move. This allows the teeth to move comfortably and without friction, and means fewer check-up appointments.
What are the advantages of having a self-ligating brace?
At Oatlands Dental Lounge we offer the Damon system of self-ligating braces. These offer the following benefits-
How will my brace be fitted?
Your dentist will conduct a full dental examination and then decide if this type of brace is suitable. If so, and you are happy with the price and the treatment plan, you can be measured up for your brace and fitted once it has been made to suit your measurements. It can even come equipped with coloured elastic bands to add a splash of individual design, much loved by children and teenagers!

The bands on conventional brackets apply friction to the wire which can slow down the movement of the teeth. Damon brackets clip the wire into position allowing it to move freely and therefore work more quickly.
