Treatment with a dental bridge is usually performed over two or three appointments. Your initial appointment with us will begin with an assessment, X-rays and examination to check if you have enough healthy bone, and that your teeth are healthy enough to support a bridge.

Following this, the abutment teeth (those which will support the false teeth) are prepared to create space at the second appointment; your dentist will remove a small amount of tooth tissue, to accommodate the bridge, which are placed over the top. We will take digital scan records or impressions of your teeth, which will serve as the basis for the design of your bridge when it is crafted either digitally in house or by our dental technician. Whilst you wait for your bridge to be created, we will give you a provisional bridge to wear, should your exposed teeth and gums require protection.

Your third visit to us will involve the fitting of your permanent bridge. Whilst we will check and adjust your bridge during this appointment, we may ask you to come in for another visit to ensure it’s an ideal match for your bite, and fits comfortably.

Together we will select a material that best meets the needs of your smile, based on the diagnostic information we have. We work closely with the laboratory to ensure your bridge is an aesthetic and functional match for your mouth and face.

Bridges are most commonly made from a precious metal base, as this provides a durable and solid structure. If the teeth that need to be replaced are visible when you smile, we may suggest the addition of porcelain to the base, as this will give a more natural-looking result.

It’s essential that you clean your bridge and supporting replacement tooth or teeth every day, as this will help reduce your chance of developing gum disease and tooth decay. We will take you through how to use oral hygiene tools, to make sure you feel confident in doing this when you leave the practice.
