Ill-fitting and loose dentures and multiple missing teeth can impact your ability to eat and chew, in addition to affecting your desire to smile.

Thanks to innovation in the world of implant dentistry, it’s possible to secure a set of bespoke dentures using very few implants – this treatment is known as implant-retained dentures. Whilst your dentures will be extremely stable in your mouth, you will also be able to detach them with ease, in order to clean them.

FAQs

1. What are the benefits of implant-retained dentures?

  • Enjoy a range of different foods and tastes:  Your dentures will feel stable when you eat all types of foods, including tougher foods more chewy foods. As the denture doesn’t need to cover your palate, you’ll have an increased ability to taste different foods.
  • Feel confident smiling and eating around others: Your new dentures will not be prone to becoming loose in social situations, giving you increased confidence and the ability to relax around others.
  • Improved quality of speech: You will find it’s easier to enunciate when you speak words, thanks to your implant-retained dentures.

2. What can I expect from treatment?

Treatment planning

Thanks to our state-of-the-art CT scanner, we can carefully and precisely plan how the implants will sit in your mouth.

Surgical treatment

Your implants are surgically placed into the jawbone.

Healing period and securing the implants

Once your implants have had the chance to heal and fuse with your jawbone, we can place stud-like attachments which lock your denture in place. These attachments ensure that your dentures remain firmly in place when you eat and talk.

Advice on maintenance

Following treatment, we will explain how you can care for your implant-retained dentures, outlining how to clean them, how often to visit us for routine care and answer any questions you might have for your dentist. We always like to make sure patients leave the practice feeling confident about how to look after their smiles and encourage you to get in touch with us if you have any questions or concerns.

3. Why might we recommend implants to secure dentures?

Implant-retained dentures are recommended for patients who have an insufficient bone. Treatment may also be favourable if you find the maintenance of movable teeth (like dentures) easier and are looking for a simple answer to eating and chewing with ease again – some patients feel cleaning around fixed bridgework can present a challenge and prefer the idea of implant-retained dentures.

One of the most common problems associated with wearing conventional dentures for many years is that they become loose. When implant-retained dentures are fastened into place, they offer a great level of stability and the need for an adhesive after treatment is eliminated.

4. Can my existing dentures be used as part of treatment?

Generally, we recommend having bespoke dentures created from scratch, as they can be made to suit the placement of your implants.
