Periodontics refers to the field within dentistry related to caring for the supporting structures of your teeth and the diseases that threaten their health.

At Oatlands Dental Lounge, our dentists have a special interest in periodontics, having completed further postgraduate training, and provided care for many patients with complex needs over the years. By thoroughly examining the periodontal tissues, your dentist can provide you with bespoke management and a long-term care plan that seeks to maintain a healthy mouth, protect restorations like crowns and dental implants, and ensure your risk of gum disease remains low in the future.

What is periodontal disease?

You may know periodontal disease by its more common name – gum disease. Untreated periodontal disease may go on to cause severe gum inflammation, leading to bone loss and ultimately tooth loss. The fact that historically, gum health has been overlooked with few early symptoms means it can be tricky to spot. This is why routine dental examination and hygienist appointments, are so important, with hygienists playing a key part in maintaining good gum health through regular polishing to remove plaque.

What kind of periodontal procedures are available to me?

There are a number of conditions that can be treated with periodontal intervention including:

  • Treatment of gum disease: We can manage and treat mild gum disease (gingivitis) and advanced gum disease (periodontitis) with professional cleaning using a variety of techniques. Read more.
  • Bad breath: Clinically known as halitosis, bad breath can be caused by genetics or lifestyle factors. By diagnosing the cause, we can establish how to keep chronic bad breath at bay. Read more.
  • Crown lengthening: A restoration can be carried out to expose more tooth structures. Read more.
  • Receding gums: Receding gums can expose root dentine that isn’t protected by tooth enamel and which is, therefore, more prone to decay and wear. Treating this issue can protect your teeth from decay, and improve the aesthetic of your smile to give a balanced tooth-to-gum ratio. Read more.
  • Implant hygiene maintenance: Gum disease is one of the main reasons implants fail. With a carefully planned and correct approach to disease management, the health of your implant can be preserved so that it serves you for as long as possible. Read more.

What happens during a periodontal consultation?

  • Taking full in-depth measurements of your gum and bone levels to identify any areas of current or previous gum disease
  • Seeking to detect any infection and decay that might be present and plan treatment to address this.
  • Outlining your options for treating any problem that is detected and explain the advantages of each.
  • Identifying the areas of your mouth that are difficult to clean and offer support on how to keep these areas healthy and clean.

We may also ask you to demonstrate your at-home routine to us, so we can provide you with guidance on how to improve your use of dental aids at home, if necessary.

Supporting you for life

Periodontal treatment seeks to create a healthy foundation, upon which you can build better dental and oral hygiene habits. It also plays an important role in ensuring the treatment you have remains sustainable, and predictable, and that any evolving condition does not reach a point where complex intervention becomes necessary. At Oatlands Dental Lounge, we believe in lifelong partnerships with our patients. This way, we can help you keep on top of developing problems, so both your natural teeth and restored teeth stay healthy and stable for as long as possible.
